Marking Nelson Mandela Day with The Elders

Wednesday 04 July 2012

Today, Orchid Project had the wonderful opportunity to celebrate the forthcoming Nelson Mandela Day at an event organised by The Elders and The Funding Network. CEO of Orchid Project, Julia Lalla-Maharajh, gave a brief presentation to The Elders’ members Archbishop Desmond Tutu and the former President of Ireland Mary Robinson, as well as an audience of volunteers and other UK-based charities on our belief that female genital cutting (FGC) can end within one generation.

The Elders spoke very inspiring words about the potential for positive social change in our world. Archbishop Tutu urged the audience to use their ideals and their capacities to create a better reality. “You dream of a world that is different,” he said, “Please continue dreaming.”

Nelson Mandela dedicated 67 years of his life to motivating positive change. Now, it’s our turn to continue his legacy by combining our efforts and striving to put an end to FGC.
